Venues that online daters could have met for their first date have been shutdown for the  time being by government lockdowns across the regions impacted by the coronavirus  outbreak; restaurants, malls, bars and other retail establishments are closed.
Even athose restrictions will be lifted, the first-time, getting-to-know-you dates of
many online-dating app users will be scared of meeting up with strangers.
Video chat provides a much safer option for exploring potential links to their matches.

Online daters will be able to call a potential match for virtual date when the new  Facebook Dating feature goes live. Via pop-up that will appear, the recipient can
either choose to accept or decline the offer.
If it is approved, the users of Facebook Dating will be linked to video chat powered by  Facebook Messenger to get to know each other better.

In terms of privacy and security features, as the feature is still being created, Facebook has declined to share more precised information about how it will function.

As a result of the pandemic, Facebook is not the first online dating site to pivot to video.
But lots of other rival dating applications were also adopting video features well before the  coronavirus hit.

For example, Bumble has offered voice and video calls in its app for approximately year.
There the feature works like normal phone call or FaceTime from Apple.
Users do not, however need to share their phone number or some other private  information, such as an email address, so as to make it safer.

Over the last two months, the company says that usage of the feature has skyrocked as users embrace virtual dating.

In the meantime, more recently, Match Group has rolled out video across number of  dating apps it operates.

Video chat was added this month by the Match app that enables users who have already  matched to connect through video calls.
“Dating from Home” prompt was also launched by Match owned Hinge and is also  preparing its own live video date function, Match says.
Live-streaming was also introduced in March by Plenty of Fish (PoF), another Match land,
that has offered singles new way to hang out with friends and future matches.

Tinder, the flagship app of Match Party, is yet to introduce live video dates, but it still provides users way to add video to their profiles.
The firm could not comment on whether or not video dating works for
Tinder, but it would be almost weird not to provide such an amazing and unique feature in this post-COVID period.

Other dating apps, including eHarmony and range of lesser-known dating apps, have
also launched their video dating, aiming to gain popularity and fame for their video dating  ideas now.

In the coming months, Facebook says the function will roll out and will be accessible  everywhere Facebook Dating is available.
