How Is IMAX Enhanced Defined?

IMAX Enhanced modifies established video and audio processing techniques.

To be considered an IMAX Enhanced device, select high-end 4K Ultra HD, OLED, and LED/LCD televisions, projectors, soundbars, home theater receivers, and AV preamp/processors must undergo an evaluation process.

The televisions and components submitted must adhere to strict performance standards developed by IMAX in collaboration with DTS and select Hollywood Studio technicians. IMAX certifies video components, while DTS certifies audio components.

To simplify the process, IMAX-certified home theater components include an IMAX Mode that automatically activates when official enhanced content is detected.

Enhancements to IMAX video
The IMAX Mode enhances the following aspects of video:

  • Content or segments of the content shot in IMAX cue the television or video projector to display the content in the IMAX aspect ratio (1.44:1 or 1.9:1).
  • Maximum brightness from HDR content based on IMAX standards and the light output capability of the television or projector. The HDR10 and 10+ formats are supported, but Dolby Vision support may be added in the future.
  • Increased image clarity through the precise detection and reduction of noise and artifacts. This results in more precise illumination of small bright objects such as stars or distant lights, fewer halos or buzzing around circular edges, and straighter lines. Additionally, grain is minimized on content shot on film rather than IMAX Digital.

Enhancements to the IMAX audio
IMAX Mode enables the following audio features:

IMAX Mode activates a DTS:X immersive audio format variation that closely replicates the surround sound experience found in IMAX theaters.
IMAX Mode can adapt to deliver immersive surround sound from a variety of speaker configurations, including overhead effects.
While IMAX Enhanced Mode is compatible with 5.1, 7.1, or additional channel configurations, IMAX recommends a 5.1.4 or 7.2.4 channel configuration for the best listening experience.
The 7 or 5 in the first number category denotes the horizontal plane’s speaker count. The second number category’s.1 or.2 indicates the number of subwoofers. The.4 in the final number category denotes the number of speakers of a particular height (either vertically firing or ceiling mounted).

What You Will Require
To fully experience IMAX Enhanced, you must have an IMAX-certified or compatible component from each of the following categories:

4K Ultra HD television or a screen-equipped video projector.
A receiver for a home theater or an AV preamp/processor equipped with a power amplifier.
Speakers and subwoofers to suit your desired configuration. (Models and brands are not specified.)
Ultra High Definition Blu-ray Disc player.
The content is available on an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. IMAX Enhanced content is available on a limited number of 4K Ultra HD discs. Additional content sources may be added.
