What Exactly Is a Smart TV?

In a nutshell, a smart TV is equipped with an operating system/platform that enables you to access, manage, and view online and network-based media content without the use of a separate box (such as a Roku or Fire Stick).

How Smart Televisions Operate

Smart TVs connect to the internet via the same broadband router and Ethernet or Wi-Fi network as your computer. Although Ethernet provides the most stable connection, if your television is located in a different room or a significant distance from your router, Wi-Fi may be more convenient.

After connecting and powering on your television, you’ll be prompted to enter any login information required by your Internet service provider (Internet Service Provider). The smart TV’s on-screen menu will include a list of available internet channels provided via apps (similar to the apps on a smartphone). Certain apps are preloaded, and you can download additional ones to expand the TV’s app library.

When you click on a channel/icon, app’s you’re taken to its content offerings, which you can select and view.

The precise method for navigating the smart TV menu and managing your apps varies by brand and model.
Smart TV App Platforms Brand TV brands utilize one or more platforms to distribute their apps. (This integrated platform is what gives a television its intelligence.) Among the brands/platforms, you’re likely to encounter are the following:

Amazon Fire TV from Element, Toshiba, and Westinghouse
Philips, Insignia, Hisense/Sharp, Hitachi, TCL, Roku TV is an element.
WebOS by LG
Samsung’s Smart Hub for Tizen
Android TVs from Element, LeECO, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, and Westinghouse
Haier, JVC, LeECO, Philips, Polaroid, Sharp, Skyworth, Soniq, and Sony are among the manufacturers. Chromecast from Toshiba
Philips: Internet television
VEWD
SmartCast or Internet Apps Plus from Vizio

The Advantages of Smart Televisions
The primary advantage of a smart TV is that it provides access to a large number of channels that provide access to television programming, movies, and music without the need to connect a television antenna or subscribe to a cable/satellite service. Additionally, some smart televisions support web browsing, gaming, and access to compatible media stored on your computer.

While smart TVs can also receive television programming via antenna or cable/satellite, Vizio has taken the bold step of eliminating built-in tuners and antenna/cable connections on the majority of its sets in favor of an all-encompassing streaming platform.

Additional Smart TV Functionality
Along with internet streaming, some smart TVs include additional features such as Miracast and Screen Sharing, which enable users to view content from compatible smartphones and tablets on a television screen. Additionally, this feature is referred to as SmartShare (LG) and SmartView (Samsung).

Some smart TVs can even send content from the TV to a compatible smartphone in reverse. Following transmission, the user can continue viewing the content on the smartphone, away from the television.
