Picture-in-Picture Compatible Apps

Because picture-in-picture is an Android feature, many of Google’s top apps, such as Chrome, YouTube, and Google Maps, support it.

YouTube’s PiP mode, on the other hand, necessitates a subscription to YouTube Premium (previously YouTube Red), the company’s ad-free platform. YouTube TV, the company’s streaming service, is also compatible with PiP mode.

VLC, an open-source video platform, Netflix (with an update to Android 8.1), WhatsApp (video chats), Facebook and Instagram (videos), Google Duo, Pocket Casts (video podcasts), and Hulu are among the other apps that are compatible.

How to Start a Picture-in-Picture Project

The app determines how you start picture-in-picture. You must first set a video to full screen in Google Chrome, then click the Home button.

Start watching a video on the YouTube app (with a premium account) and then click the Home button.

Some apps, such as VLC, require you to first activate the feature in the system settings. When you’re in a video call on WhatsApp, tap the video preview to allow picture-in-picture mode. PiP is no longer supported by YouTube in Chrome. The guidelines below refer to videos that aren’t on YouTube.

  • Go to a website that has a video on it.
  • Select “Fullscreen” from the drop-down menu.
  • Press the Play button.
  • When the video starts playing, press Home, and then drag the video around your phone’s screen.

Controls for a Picture-in-Picture

You’ll see a window with your video or other content on the bottom right of your display once you’ve figured out how to launch PiP in your favorite app.

To see the controls, tap the window. You’ll see Play, Fast Forward, Rewind, and a MaximizeFullscreen button in some situations, which returns you to the app in full screen. The Fast-Forward button in playlists advances to the next song on the chart. Only an escape and fullscreen button are available on some videos.

You can move the window across the screen and dismiss it by dragging it to the bottom of the screen.

If you don’t need graphics, some apps, such as YouTube, have a headphone shortcut that lets you play audio in the background.

BROWSERS THAT SUPPORT PICTURE IN PICTURE

You can also enjoy PiP in Safari and all common browser apps. Open a site with embedded videos and follow the same method as above.
