If you use Windows 7, your operating system does not officially support it. Regardless, you can get WhatsApp working in Windows 7 quite easily for the time being.

As of this writing, the WhatsApp for Desktop installer does not check the operating system version and can be launched on Windows 7 as well. As a result, perform the following.

  • Navigate to this page in your browser and download the installer for Windows 10 and Windows 8. As of this writing, it is a 61.4 MB file.
  • To run and install the application, double-click it. WhatsApp’s shortcut will appear directly on the Desktop and in the Start Menu after a few seconds, and the app will open:
  • It displays a QR code that must be scanned using the mobile WhatsApp application. Open the menu on your phone by pressing the three-dot button and selecting WhatsApp web to use the phone’s camera to scan the QR code on your computer screen. The desktop client is nothing more than a wrapper for the web client.
  • Once this is complete, you can begin chatting immediately. The app, like the Web version, requires you to keep mobile WhatsApp running on your phone. Additionally, it does not yet support voice calls.

I found it perfectly usable in Windows 7 after a brief trial. When someone messages you, it displays a red overlay icon on the Taskbar button, similar to how Skype for Desktop does.
Toast notifications, which are only available in Windows 8 and Windows 10, will obviously not work, but this is not a big deal, as toast notifications display all of the WhatsApp messages you receive to anyone looking at your screen, infringing on your privacy.

Thus, if you are a Windows 7 user, you can install WhatsApp with very few restrictions. Another point of contention is the app itself. In comparison to similar solutions such as Viber or Telegram, it is a very basic app that lacks a plethora of features available in competing apps’ desktop versions. These competing applications do not require your phone’s mobile version to be running. Viber and Telegram both require your phone only for one-time SMS verification. Apart from these issues, WhatsApp functions normally.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, is one of the most popular smartphone messaging apps. It is a feature-rich application that is updated on a regular basis with new features. However, WhatsApp is missing a critical feature – a dedicated app for computers that allows users to use WhatsApp without using a smartphone.

WhatsApp Web enables you to access WhatsApp directly from your computer. It does, however, require a smartphone to scan the QR code and works only when the smartphone is connected to a network.

Telegram, a competitor to WhatsApp, has a dedicated app for PC users. Messenger, which is also owned by Facebook, can be used without a smartphone on a computer. If you’re looking for a way to use WhatsApp on your computer, we’ve got you covered.
