In Device Preferences, how to Configure the Dock
- Under the Apple menu, pick Device Preferences.
- Go to Dock and pick it.
- The Size slider controls the size of the icons in the Dock. The Dock will appear as you move it, allowing you to preview the changes.
- The maximum size you can get with this slider is influenced by the number of apps in the Dock.
- Toggle on Magnification by selecting the checkbox next to it. When Magnification is allowed, app icons can expand when you hover your mouse over them, making them easier to see.
- To change the magnification level, move the slider. You can choose where the Dock appears on the screen using the Location on Screen option. To suit more icons, select Bottom.
- If the preference pane doesn’t provide you with enough choices, you can use an app like cDock to extend your options.
- Remove games, stacks, and document icons from your Dock if customizing it doesn’t solve your space problems.
- Uninstalling apps is not the same as removing apps from the dock. The procedure for extracting apps and documents from the Dock has evolved somewhat over time. The methods used in various versions of OS X and macOS are slightly different.
There are several limitations on which things you can delete in Mac OS X and macOS. The Dock’s permanent members are the Finder and the Trash. In the Dock, there’s also a separator (a vertical line or dotted line icon) that marks the boundary between apps and documents, directories, and other objects.

What Happens When a Dock Icon Is Removed?
The Dock does not contain any software or papers. Instead, the Dock contains aliases, which are represented by the icon of an object. These icons are shortcuts to the individual apps and documents on your Mac’s file system, which may be stored elsewhere. Most software, for example, is stored in the Applications folder. And any documents in your Dock are likely to reside in your home folder.
Moving an object to the Dock only generates an alias and does not transfer the related item from its current position in the file system to the Dock. Similarly, deleting an object from the Dock does not erase the original item from Mac’s file system; it simply removes the alias from the Dock. Removing an app or a document from the Dock does not delete it from your Mac; it just removes the icon and alias.
How to Clear the Dock of Software and Documents
Removing a Dock icon is simple no matter which version of OS X or macOS you’re using, but there is a slight difference between versions to be aware of.
- You can drag and drop objects from the Dock in most versions of Mac OS X and macOS.
- If the application is currently open, close it.
- You don’t have to close a document before deleting it, but it’s usually a good idea.
- Drag the item’s icon from the Dock to the Desktop by clicking and dragging it.
- A Remove menu will appear as soon as the icon is fully outside of the Dock.
