Why Did the iPhone Personal Hotspot Feature Go Away?
In most cases, using Personal Hotspot is as easy as turning it on. Some users, however, report that their Personal Hotspot has vanished. This usually occurs after updating the operating system or jailbreaking an iPhone. Try our troubleshooting tips when Personal Hotspot isn’t working if you’re having a different problem with the hotspot function.

How to Recover a Stolen iPhone Personal Hotspot
If your Personal Hotspot is missing, follow these ten steps in order to resolve the problem.
Switch on and off cellular data. A connection to a cellular data network, such as 4G, is needed for Personal Hotspot. It’s likely that resetting the cellular data link will bring back a missed Hotspot.
Check the settings for the Personal Hotspot. Personal Hotspot may be absent from the Settings app, but it may still be present elsewhere. If that’s the case, you can get it back by taking a different path.
- Pick Cellular, Personal Hotspot from the Settings app.
- Turn on the Personal Hotspot switch (green).
- Return to the main Settings screen after that. If Personal Hotspot appears under Cellular, the issue has been resolved.
- Restart your iPhone if necessary. Restarting an iPhone is a basic troubleshooting technique that, while not guaranteed to function, is simple to implement. To restart an iPhone, simultaneously press and hold the home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears on the screen, then release the buttons.
- Change your carrier’s settings. Your phone company (also known as your carrier) launches new versions of the settings that make your iPhone function on its network on a regular basis, but not as often as Apple releases new versions of iOS. The lack of a Personal Hotspot may be the result of updating to the most recent settings.
Update your iOS to the most recent version. The absence of the Personal Hotspot feature may be due to a bug in iOS, the iPhone’s operating system. If that’s the case, an iOS update might be available to fix the issue. Updates for iOS are free and easy to install. Updates can be downloaded wirelessly or via iTunes.
APN certificates should be removed. This choice only affects a limited number of users, but it may be the culprit. If you installed any Access Point Name (APN) certificates to make your phone function with certain phone companies, especially those outside the United States, a Personal Hotspot could not appear.
Delete the APN certificate in that case. To uninstall a profile, go to Settings > General > Profiles and select the profile you want to get rid of. Then tap Delete Profile and then Delete in the confirmation pop-up.
Reset the network settings if necessary. Problems with the settings that regulate the phone’s connections to cellular and Wi-Fi networks will result in a missed Personal Hotspot. It’s possible that resetting those settings and starting over would fix the problem.
Change the name of your iPhone. Sam’s iPhone, for example, is the name given to any iPhone. Although that name is seldom used, it has the potential to cause the Personal Hotspot to vanish. If you’ve changed the name of your phone or unlocked it, change it back to its original name.
Recover data from a backup. If nothing else has succeeded, it’s time to take the next step: restoring from a backup. This clears the iPhone’s data and settings and replaces them with an older version. Anything you don’t back up before starting this phase will be lost, so make a backup of your iPhone first.
Make an appointment at a Genius Bar or contact Apple. If you’ve gotten this far and the Personal Hotspot feature is still missing, you’re dealing with a much more difficult problem. Obtain assistance from Apple at this time. For expert assistance, visit your local Apple Store. Choose Settings, General, Reset, Network Settings from the drop-down menu.
