How to Create and Use Playlists on iPhone
This guide will show you how to make and manage music playlists on your iPhone. The instructions are for iOS 12, and they differ slightly from those for iOS 11 and iOS 10.
On the iPhone, you can build playlists.
To build a playlist on an iPhone or iPod Touch, follow these steps:

- To open the Music app, tap it.
- Select Library.
- Playlists can be accessed by tapping on them.
- Choose the option to build a new playlist.
- Enter a name for the playlist by tapping Playlist Name.
- Enter details about the playlist in the Description area.
- Tap the camera icon and select Take Picture or Choose Photo to add a photo to the playlist. Then simply obey the on-screen instructions. The Music app creates a collage from the album art of music you include and assigns it to the playlist if you don’t take a picture or connect to one.
- Tap Add Music to add music to the playlist.
Look for songs. If you have an Apple Music subscription, you have access to the entire Apple Music library. You can also choose from Artists, Albums, Songs, Compilations, and Downloaded Music while browsing your library. When you’ve found a song you’d like to add to the playlist, select it to add a checkmark.
- Tap Done to save the playlist after you’ve checked all the songs you want.
On the iPhone, you can edit and delete playlists.
On an iPhone, you can edit or remove current playlists by following these steps:
- To open the playlist you want to alter, tap it on the Playlist pad.
- Tap Edit to rearrange the order of the songs in the playlist.
- To switch a song to a different venue, drag the three-line icon to the right of it. When you’ve arranged the songs the way you want them, tap Done to save your changes.
- Tap Edit, then tap the red button to the left of the song, then tap Delete to remove it from the playlist. Tap Done when you’re finished editing the playlist to save your changes.
- To delete a playlist, press and hold the name of the playlist (Apple calls this 3D Touch), select Delete from Library, and then tap Delete Playlist to confirm.
Here’s another way to remove a playlist from your device. To remove a playlist from your library, open it, tap the menu button (the… icon), select Remove, and then tap Delete from Library.
Playlists can be created by adding songs to them.
You can add songs to current playlists in two ways:
- Open a playlist, tap Edit, tap Add Music, and then choose music from each of your library’s sections. To add an album to the playlist, tap the song title and label it with a checkmark. When you’re finished, tap Done.
- If you want to add a song to a playlist while listening to it, put it on full screen, tap the menu button (the… icon), tap Add to a Playlist, and then tap the playlist.
- In iTunes, build smart playlists.
You choose the songs to include and the order in which they appear in regular playlists. Build a Smart Playlist if you want something a little smarter — for example, a playlist that contains all songs by a certain artist or musician or all songs with a certain star rating — and that automatically updates when new songs are added.
With Smart Playlists, you set the requirements, and iTunes builds a playlist of songs that fit. It also updates the playlist with new songs whenever you add one that meets the criteria. Smart Playlists can only be produced on the desktop edition of iTunes, but you can sync them to your iPhone or iPod Touch once you’ve done so.
