7 surefire ways to stay friends after having sex

1. Take your time. You may have both decided that you want to remain friends after your fling or relationship, but that doesn’t mean you have to dive in headfirst. Take it slowly. If you go a few weeks without seeing each other, that’s okay. It’s probably even better to try and keep your distance for a little while.

Think of it like any new friendship. You wouldn’t call or text a new friend every day. It’s okay to send an occasional message, but never do it out of loneliness or when you’re drunk. Limit communication initially to once or twice per week.

2. Go in groups. When you do start seeing each other again socially, try to make sure it happens in a group environment. Go out with mutual friends and attempt to treat each other like you would any other friend. Avoid going with another couple as it can seem like a double-date this way.

3. Avoid alone time. If you can’t find other pals to go with, make sure you hang out somewhere where you won’t feel like it’s just the two of you. If you’re meeting for lunch, go to a casual lunch spot like a coffee shop rather than an intimate restaurant. During the day, a public park is another nice alternative. Taking a trip to the movies is arguably the worst idea imaginable.

4. Keep your clothes dry. Do not consume alcoholic beverages. Drinking will almost always result in one of two things: a heated dispute or stumbling back into bed. Drinking should be avoided at all costs because these are the last two things you want to happen when you’re attempting to create your friendship. It may be good later on after some time has passed since you were lovers and your relationship has become stronger, but in the early days, it’s not worth the risk.

5. There will be no sex talk! Whatever you do, don’t bring up the subject of sex. Don’t discuss any sex you’re having with your new partner, and don’t discuss the sex you had previously. There’s no reason to start talking about your history because it will just jeopardize the friendship you’re attempting to form. This isn’t always simple, especially if you and your partner used to enjoy fantastic sex. It may seem amusing to reminisce about it, but in the end, it will just add to the unnecessary temptation and get in the way of becoming friends.

6. Be open and honest with new partners. While you shouldn’t tell your ex-lover or new buddy about your new sex, there’s nothing wrong with notifying them when you start seeing someone new. Of course, if there hasn’t been much time, it’s best to wait, but it’s always better if this information comes directly from you rather than via the rumor mill. It’s not a bad idea to ask if they’re seeing someone, but if you don’t think you’ll be able to take a yes, it’s best to steer clear of the subject.

7. Stay away from previous habits. It’s wise to stay away from your former haunts, at least in the early stages of your friendship. Stay away from the restaurants where you had dates or the hangout locations where your relationship grew. You undoubtedly had some sweet little inside jokes or nicknames for one other previously, but it’s best to forget about them now. Remember that you’re beginning from fresh and must maintain a clean slate.

You have the ability to make it happen. It will take some effort to stay friends after having sex, but that is true of all friendships. Allowing your past to spoil the great friendship you can still have is not a good idea! That’s that about “7 surefire ways to stay friends after having sex”
