Classroom has simplified the classroom workflow and made it easier for teachers and students to communicate. Google Classroom focuses on a few things and does them really well.

  • It serves as a hub for all of the class’s activities.
  • It allows instructors to construct assignments (and other class activities).
  • It collects students’ assignments.
  • It aids teachers in grading and providing feedback on assignments.
  • It gives students their assignments back.

This tutorial will show you how to set up Google Classroom in minutes and complete the basic tasks. Because Classroom isn’t a full-featured learning management system, it will also address some of the things it can’t do.

How to set up your Google Classroom class

Set up your Google Classroom by following these steps:

1. Go to classroom.google.com for further information.
Google Classroom is now available for Gmail users as well as Google for Education accounts. Google Classroom is now available to everyone with a Google account.

2. To create your first class, click the “+” button in the top right corner.

(It’s right next to the checkerboard icon, which allows you to access all of your programs.) Then select “Create class” from the drop-down menu.

If you’re just starting started, your screen will probably appear somewhat like this.

If you already have some classes, they will appear on this home screen. The “+” button allows you to create new classes.

3. Fill in the blanks with information about your class.
You must give your class a name. When your students open Google Classroom, this is how they will recognize your class.

To distinguish between distinct classes of the same type, use the “section” field. This field will be used by many professors during the class hour. (This is an optional field.)

You can choose from a list of class subjects or create your own in the “subject” section. (This is an optional field.)

4. Create and share a class code. Students can begin enrolling in your class after it has been created.

NEW: Send a link to students to invite them! Students can now join your class by clicking on a unique invitation link. Simply choose the class code and select “copy invite link.” If you already have a group email list set up, you can drop this link in your distance learning classroom chat box or email it.

With a join code, students can join your class (above). This is a simple and quick technique to attract students to your lesson. Students can log in to Google Classroom, click the “+” button, then “Join class” to enter the join code after viewing the join code (click []). After that, they’ll be added to your class.

Students can be invited to your class by email. If your students do not meet in person for your lesson, this is a good choice. To do so, go to the top of the page and pick the “People” option. Then select “Invite Students” from the drop-down menu (an icon with a person and a plus). If all students are in a Google Group, you can invite them individually with email addresses or in groups.

5. Make your Google Classroom your own.
There will be no pupils in your class when you first start it. This is the time to be inventive and have some fun! On the right side of the header, click “Select theme.” It’ll bring up a gallery of header photos for you to use in your classroom.

You can also add a photo at the top of your Classroom to make it more visually appealing. You can use a photograph of your class or something related to it. Some professors will design a bespoke header image that includes critical information as well as entertaining images. Create a custom header with this template.

How can you make a Google Meet link in your classroom?
In your Google Classroom, go to the settings icon. Scroll down to “General” from there.

Select “Generate meet link” from the drop-down menu.

If you want your students to be able to see and access this link when they log into Classroom, turn on “visible to students.”

You can copy the link once it has been generated if you wish to share it on another platform. You can also use this page to reset the connection.

What is the best way to use Google Meet for elearning and online learning?
When students are learning from home, Google Meet can serve as a vital link between you and them. Here are some suggestions for how to put it to use.

1. Make a public announcement.
This is an excellent approach to keep in touch with your students and provide them with up-to-date information. The class stream contains announcements, but they do not have a grade attached to them.

Create a Google Classroom announcement.
To share something with your class, go to your class Stream and click “share something with your class.” Fill up the blanks with the wording for your notice. Add any files, YouTube videos, or links you’d like (attached or from Google Drive). Then publish it (or schedule it for later).

In Google Classroom, you can make an assignment, a quiz, a question, attach materials, or reuse an earlier post.

2. Make a task, a quiz, or a question, attach materials, or repurpose an old post.
This is where students put in their time! You can ask students to answer a graded (or ungraded) question, take a quiz, or complete an assignment. They can be made under the “Classwork” tab (above). You can also attach materials that you want the students to see, or you can repurpose an older post.

Include the following items in your assignment or question (above):

Your assignment’s title should be descriptive. (It’s a good idea to number your assignments to avoid confusion.)

This is a description. This is useful for students who were absent, as well as for later reference to a previous assignment.

Points. Determine the value of the assignment/question in terms of points (or use the drop-down menu to make it ungraded).

A deadline has been set. Choose a due date for the assignment (or don’t use one at all).

Attachments to files. Assign the assignment right away, schedule it to post automatically later, or save it as a draft to finish later. Attach files, add files from Google Drive, include YouTube videos, or give students a link.

3. Create a topic list for your class.
You can categorize your assignments and questions by topic to keep everything organized if your class has different chapters, units, subjects, and so on.

Add a topic by clicking the “Create” option under “Classwork.” You’ll be able to add that topic to each new assignment or announcement you make after that.

4. Return and grade the work.
You can provide feedback and grade the assignment once students have completed their work. To examine student work, click on the “Classwork” icon and then on the assignment.

Here are a few things you can do to help…
Sort the assignment by students who have completed it or by all students who were assigned the task. (To do so, simply click on the large number.) You can also use the drop-down menu underneath the huge numbers to sort by different criteria.)

Click on a student’s work to open and view it. You can post comments directly to student documents, slide presentations, and other types of files. or…

By clicking on the student’s name, you may type and view private comments to the student. With the history, you can also see when files were handed in.

Give each pupil a grade for their work.
Return work to students after you’re finished. Make sure the box next to their names is ticked, then press the “Return” button.

Here are some suggestions for making the most of Google Classroom
Click and drag your class cards around the screen to reorder them on your “Classes” page (click the three lines menu button and “Classes”).

Click a folder icon to open the Google Classroom folder for that class in Google Drive. When students turn in their work, it goes here.

Due dates for assignments are immediately added to your class’s Google Calendar. To view a calendar icon, click it.

Do you need to make a separate copy of a file for each student in an assignment? (For example, you have a visual organizer that you want ALL of your kids to fill out.) Google Classroom works in the same way as your digital photocopier does. When you attach the file to your assignment, select “Make a copy for each student” from the file’s drop-down menu.
