Here’s How to Turn Off 12 Facebook Settings and Notifications Right Now

Here’s How to Turn Off 12 Facebook Settings and Notifications Right Now: Facebook allows us to reconnect with old friends, see what former classmates and colleagues are up to, and stay in touch with family members who live far away. You may watch endless cooking videos (but never make them) and even discover a used motorbike in excellent shape.

However, with each new feature release comes yet another notification, privacy worry, or just annoyance—and you don’t have to put up with it. Here’s how to customize your Facebook experience to be precisely how you want it, from annoying commercial notifications to cringe-worthy memories you’d rather leave in the past.

  • Turn off the “On This Day” memories.

Some memories should be relegated to the past. You can choose whether or not you want to view On This Day or other Memory articles, and you can even specify who and when you don’t want to be reminded of.

Click Memories in the left-hand sidebar of your profile page, next to Friends, Groups, Messenger, and Marketplace (you can also go directly to facebook.com/memories). Select “None” to turn off all alerts, or “Highlights” to just receive notifications about certain memories, such as celebration videos, from the left menu.

You may also get down to business and determine whether or not you want to be reminded of certain persons or days through Facebook notification. Pick Hide Persons (and then select individuals using search and drop-down option) or Hide Dates in the left-hand bar under Notifications to hide Memories connected to certain people or dates (and then set your preferred date parameters). You are the one who sets the rules!

  • Facebook Live Notifications can be turned off.

More notifications appeared with Facebook Live. Whether or whether you’ve been tagged in a video and intend to watch it, Facebook notifies you when friends go live. You can turn off Facebook live notifications with only a few clicks. Go to Notifications in Settings, scroll down to Video, click to enlarge the drop-down, and select “off.” Here you can manage notifications for tags, birthdays, individuals you may know, the marketplace, and more.

  • How to Stop Videos From Playing By Themselves

While scrolling through your newsfeed, you may come across certain videos that you do not wish to see, but nevertheless play without notice. To disable random movies from auto-playing in your Facebook News Feed, go to the upper right-hand corner’s drop-down arrow, select Settings and Privacy, then Settings again. Pick Videos from the left sidebar (you may need to scroll down a little), then select “off” from the drop-down box to the right of “Auto-Play Videos.”

  • Disconnect from all non-Facebook activities.

The Off-Facebook Activity tool, which Facebook just unveiled, allows you to control how the company observes and tracks your activity across the internet (yes, it has been doing that). Facebook’s help center states: “Off-Facebook activity is a summary of interactions with businesses and organizations that businesses and organizations share with us, such as visiting their applications or websites. They share this information with us through our Business Tools, such as Facebook Login or Facebook Pixel.” The good news is that you can delete the history of apps and websites that have shared your data, as well as turn off data tracking in the future.

Choose Settings and Privacy from the drop-down arrow in the top right-hand corner, then Settings again. In the left column, select Your Facebook Information, then Off-Facebook Activity. Choose Clear History, Clear History to clear your history. Select Future Off-Facebook Activity and click Turn Off to disable future Off-Facebook activity for all applications and websites.

  • Disable the Location History feature

You can enable Location History in the Facebook app to allow Facebook to track your precise location using the Location Services on your smartphone. However, if you don’t want Facebook to keep track of your various locations within the app, you can turn off Location History at any moment. Tap the Menu symbol (three horizontal lines) in the lower right corner of the Facebook app, then Settings, Privacy Shortcuts, and Manage your location settings, before turning off the toggle icon.

  • Disable location sharing (Nearby Friends)

Nearby Friends is a feature that allows you and your friends to share your location with each other, and enabling it in your app will also enable Location History. If you don’t want Facebook to share your location with your friends, go to the bottom-right menu icon and select Nearby Friends (or See More if it isn’t at the top). Toggle the toggle icon to “off” by pressing your own name, then settings. If you decide to start sharing your location again, you can always modify these settings back.

  • Ways to Block Ads You Don’t Want to See

You’re not alone if you feel targeted by Facebook advertisements or simply don’t want to be shown information you’re not interested in. When an ad you don’t want to view appears in your Feed or on a webpage, click the ellipsis on the right and pick “Hide Ad” to remove that one, or “Hide all ads from [brand]” to remove all advertisements from that brand (at least on Facebook).

  • Unread Messages are marked as such.

You want to be able to open a message before responding, but not to leave the individual on “read.” Individual messages can be easily marked as “unread,” allowing you a little more time to think of the ideal response. A circle with three dots to the right appears when you hover over each conversation in Facebook Messenger. Select Mark as Unread from the drop-down menu.

  • Clear Out Your News Feed

It’s not them; it’s you—or, on the other hand, it may be them. In either case, you may have some Facebook friends who are really active and filling up your timeline with their updates (and driving you bananas). You don’t want to unfriend them, but you do need to reduce the amount of noise they make? We are aware of your concerns. There are a few options available to you.

You can Unfollow someone (as opposed to Unfriending or Blocking them)—their posts and activity will no longer appear in your feed, but you’ll still be able to access their profiles and send them messages. To do so, select “Unfollow [person’s name]” from the three dots in the upper right corner of a single person’s or page’s post. You can also go to the main drop-down menu in the upper right corner, pick Privacy and Settings, News Feed Preferences, Unfollow, and search for the person you’re looking for.

  • Turn off facial recognition

Facebook’s ability to scan photographs, recognize faces, and suggest tags for photos is objectively impressive. It was actually rather helpful at first, but then it became a little disturbing. You can instantly turn off this dubious function if you don’t like the idea of Facebook knowing exactly what you look like—and don’t require help recognizing your own or your friends’ faces in photographs. Select Face Recognition from the left-hand menu under Settings & Privacy, Settings. “Do you want Facebook to be able to recognize you in images and videos?” the question asks. Select “no” from the drop-down menu when you click Edit.

  • Ways to Stop Receiving Annoying Game and App Invitations

Do you have a Facebook buddy from high school who keeps inviting you to play Candy Crush on Facebook even though you haven’t spoken to them in years? You can prohibit them from inviting you to their app by blocking their invites. Simply go to “Settings,” select “Blocking,” and type the name(s) of the friends you don’t want to receive invitations from. This also applies to events, general apps, pages, and messages.

  • Notifications of Group Activity

You’re getting notifications from a Facebook group you joined years ago but haven’t left yet? Turn off those scumbags. Click the three-dot button next to the search icon in the upper right corner of the group page, then Manage Notifications, then choose your desired settings: “All posts,” “Highlights,” “Friends’ posts,” or “Off” alerts are available.
