Arik Air Flight: On 3 April 2006, three years after the liquidation of Nigeria Airways, Arik Air took over the former Nigeria Airways facilities in Lagos and began reconstruction work.

Arik took delivery of two new Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft on June 14, 2006, to operate domestic routes across Nigeria, as well as two ex-United Airlines Boeing 737–300s and three 50-seat Bombardier CRJ-200 aircraft throughout the African continent beginning in Summer 2006.

The Federal Ministry of Aviation granted Arik Air permission to travel to Trinidad and Tobago as well as Amsterdam, London, and Madrid in Europe in August 2006.

The airline also expected to travel to Atlanta, Miami, and Houston in the United States, as well as Birmingham, England.

Arik Air started scheduled passenger flights between Lagos and Abuja on October 30, 2006, with four CRJ 900 aircraft. Flights to Calabar began on November 15, 2006, and services to Benin City and Enugu began on January 7, 2007. Ojemai Investments held the airline outright.

In order to ensure better facilities and protection, the Nigerian government set a deadline of 30 April 2007 for all airlines operating in the country to re-capitalize or be grounded.

The airline met the requirements of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for re-capitalization and was re-registered to fly.

The US Department of Transportation granted Arik Air permission to travel to the United States on April 4, 2008.

On December 15, 2008, Arik Air began international service to London-Heathrow, using a damp-leased Airbus A340-500 aircraft from Hi Fly.

Johannesburg was added on June 1, 2009, New York JFK on November 30, 2009, and Dubai on July 28, 2014.

Arik Niger (IATA code: Q9), a subsidiary airline, began operations in April 2009 but was shut down in February 2010.
