Facebook Dating started with little fanfare in the U.S. last week. A lot of the press was presented on the latest dating-app, part of the existing Facebook app, but it was unclear whether users were willing to respond to a social network social dating app that many flew away. Naturally, many of these users remain on Instagram, which Facebook owns, but the social network itself is increasingly regarded as tragically cool and mostly boomers. Facebook has also developed a company’s reputation that cannot rely on your data following the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The brand is not healthy, in other words.
I was curious about Facebook dating because I thought it would be a short shelf life for a single person with dating apps like Hinge and Bumble. I chose Dating Dating (which needed me to re-download the Facebook app, I would have deleted it since my phone battery was running out). It was a city of fantasies. You can add somebody as a pitcher in a “secret pitch” section and match them if they also list you as a pitcher. However, the bigger problem is that I don’t want anyone to date which is already a Facebook friend. Facebook Dating also suggests people you don’t know about — but in New York City, that feature isn’t available yet.
Facebook Dating is currently a static app that hasn’t much to do. Dating should be based on shared interests and even information such as what events you will meet with others beyond your friend’s group in the future. Once again, the company must persuade people to have confidence in its App and opt-in. Will it be a year or even six months before Facebook Dating comes into play? But if you’re curious about Facebook’s foray into the world of online dating, here’s all you have to know.
How to get started on Facebook Dating
As I mentioned before, Facebook Dating is not a separate app but is part of the main Facebook app. The latest version of the Facebook app must be downloaded. The menu icon in the lower right-hand corner is accessible from Hamburg; click, scroll down. Right under Events, you will see “Dating” with a heart logo. Once you have registered, Facebook asks you to fill out a Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble profile. This profile is different from your regular Facebook profile. The dates of age, preferred height, religious points, and if you have/want to have children (Women, Trans women, men, Trans men, and non-binary people are all options) are the ones. All these are relatively standard in most database applications.
In your dating profile, you can add photos to your current Facebook profile. You can, too, be “described in 3 sentences, three words, or three emojis” on Facebook.
The U.S. and 19 other countries, including Mexico, Brazil, Canada, and the Philippines, currently provide Facebook dating. It is set to start next year in Europe. You must be 18 years of age or older to use Facebook Dating.
How to see people who like you and message you on Facebook Dating
There are “likes” and “talks” at the top of the home screen on Facebook Dating. Here you will be able to see the people who liked you and your meetings.
The Facebook Dating discussions are separate from Facebook Messenger.
The Secret Crush feature, which is some relief, also enables you to match your existing Facebook friends.
How to use Facebook Dating’s ‘Secret Crush’ feature
Secret Crush sounds like a 2004 feature (remember Pokes?), but Facebook is hoping to attract users. To use the Secret Crush screen, add your existing friends to your crush list. Select Crush from the Home Dating screen. The App notifies both parties of a match if they also select you as a crush. When you choose someone to be a crush, you’ll be notified that someone has a desire—that is, if you also decided to date. You can add up to 9 wishes and remove people whenever you want. A function such as Secret Crush isn’t new to the online dating world. Apps like Bumble let you know when people like you and show boring avatars to see who is behind the blurts.
The ability to also add Instagram members to the Secret Crush list, a move that may prove semi-successful, as Instagram alone is already an unofficial dating app, is planned by Facebook Dating. However, to use this feature, Instagram users must download the Facebook app, which may dissuade many users.
At the end of the year, Facebook plans to add to your Dating profile the ability to link Instagram and Facebook stories.
Facebook Dating and privacy
For a good reason, people may be unwilling to provide Facebook with more information. Facebook currently benefits from its dating service; however, as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) points out, it may vary in the future. “Facebook can combine information about your dating profile with the rest of your account data — the company can hardly imagine that it can add its years of user data with new data it collects regarding their date,” said the organization.
Even if Facebook does not currently sell your data to third parties, you should be aware of the possibility of this change.
When creating a Facebook Dating profile, you agree to its terms and conditions of service. “Anyone in Dating can see your dating profile,” the App says. “On your dating profile, always your first name, age, and pictures are available.”
Your Facebook dating profile is separate from your regular Facebook profile, so it won’t affect the other if you change one. The App also says, “AnyoneAnyone who joins DatingDating, apart from your existing friends and AnyoneAnyone you have blocked, can see your Dating profile. The App also says.”
You also cancel your Facebook dating profile when you remove your Facebook account.
Is Facebook Dating worth it?
Since Facebook has just launched U.S. Dating, it is difficult to say if Facebook is only worth downloading to create a dating profile. In 2012, Tinder launched several apps that have reflected its user experience and profile in recent years. The party’s very late on Facebook. It also looks like Facebook’s desperate effort to re-invite younger users. At this point, individual people are aware of what apps they like and how. In 2019 everyone is unlikely to migrate to Facebook Dating, but we’re going to have to wait and look. First of all, people need to join.
