University Scholarship Scheme

Training is a long-term commitment with an equally long gestation period, as both parents and guardians agree, but it is one of the greatest legacies to bequeath to individuals, communities, and society. Since 1952, that has been Shell Nigeria’s conviction. The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company spent $14.8 million in scholarships in 2014. (SNEPCo).

A program run by SPDC on behalf of the NNPC/Shell/Elf/Agip Joint Venture, the University Scholarship Scheme, provides a quiet yet rather in-depth comment on the company’s interest in fostering capacity building in the region.

Over 4,000 Nigerian undergraduates write aptitude tests each year to join the ever-growing list of students sponsored by Shell Nigeria at Nigerian Universities. The applicants are shortlisted on the basis of the results of the SSCE and JAMB national examinations. An aptitude examination at the centers of PortHarcourt, Warri, Enugu, Lagos, and Abuja follows this.

The National Merit Award (NM), open to Nigerian undergraduates, and the Areas of Service Merit Award (AOM) are two types of Scholarship Scheme for students from communities in which Shell Nigeria works. In both grades, only first-year students are eligible for the awards.

Every year, an average of 16,000 applicants respond to Shell Nigeria’s ads, inviting interested candidates to apply for scholarships that are only available at Nigerian universities.

Secondary School Scholarship

In Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Imo, and Rivers states, the Shell Nigeria High School Scholarship Scheme is for host communities.

A total of 2,600 post-primary scholarships in the seven states is awarded per year. The Scholarship Scheme for Secondary Schools is designed to help students pay through school, as well as to increase academic performance in host communities.

The method, which is also a welcome relief for many parents and guardians of their children’s education, has become so popular that thousands of parents and children look forward to it as a golden opportunity every year.

Indeed, it has become a welcome feature of educational development today, especially in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region.

Cradle-to-Career Scholarship

The Cradle-to-Career Scholarship is an all-inclusive scholarship program that offers brilliant students of less-privileged backgrounds the opportunity to attend reputable high schools in Nigeria.

In the Niger Delta and Nigeria in general, the Cradle-to-Career scheme is planned to overcome educational gaps arising from geographical and socio-economic disparities and further increase the high level of literacy.

There are two categories of the Shell Nigeria Students Scholarship Schemes.

  • On behalf of the joint venture, the SPDC JV Cradle-to-Career Scholarship scheme is managed by Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited (SPDC).

Applicants from the main Niger Delta states of the Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta have been selected since 2010. There are currently three hundred and fifty (350) talented students enrolled in quality secondary schools.

  • The National Cradle-to-Career Scholarship Program, which is managed on behalf of itself, its co-venture partners, and the NNPC by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo).

Candidates from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are chosen, out of which the best three (3) are given a scholarship, which also meets all other award requirements.

With 60 recipients already put in very successful private secondary schools, the scheme is in its second year.

There have been many local and international commendations for the Shell Nigeria Cradle-to-Career scholarship. The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, described the scheme as “a landmark initiative” at the 2011 United Nations (UN) Innovation Fair in Geneva and recognized its remarkable contributions to educational growth in the Niger Delta and Nigeria.
