Earl had several run-ins with the law in his teen years and was often abusive. Survival on the streets led him, at a young age, to be in and out of jail and to use drugs and alcohol. Salvation came in hip-hop form, and before he went on to rap, he started out as a DJ and a human beat-box.

In 1992, Ruffhouse, a subsidiary of Columbia, signed him to a contract, and his debut single “Born Loser” was released. He seemed to be a promising start for DMX, but his single was under-promoted by the company, and his contract with them quickly ended.

In 1994, he (DMX) published his second song, Make a Pass. But he was arrested shortly afterward for trafficking drugs.

Three years later, in 1997, DMX signed on with Def Jam and made several guest appearances with LL Cool J and Mase. A third single, Get at me Dog, was released the following year. On the rap and dance charts, this song became a gold-selling smash hit, and DMX became a successful star.
